Pravah Workshop

Why volunteer?

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development overtly recognizes volunteer groups as stakeholders to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The nature of volunteerism in itself is a crucial means for sustainable development through which individuals and communities can participate in their own growth.

Volunteering allows a person to see a world different from the one that they may usually be a part of. Such experiences enable them to gain multiple perspectives and the ability to work with different people and in different contexts, along with developing decision making skills, active citizenship and becoming inclusive leaders.

Why is NOW a good time?

By 2030 the number of young people in the world (15-24 years) is likely to increase up to 1.3 billion and there is no doubt that the present and the future is in the hands of young people.

Adolescence is a time of transition into adulthood and also the phase where identities and first impressions are formed. How will they engage with their environment? What are the kinds of choices they will make? These are questions worth considering.
This is a time where there is a desire to explore and experience the larger world and form an understanding about it, which can be enhanced through contributing to the world and allowing the world to contribute to the self.

However to get the adolescents involved, spaces must be created which enable them to experience the real world in a space without preaching or telling them what to do. We need to offer tool or ways which enable them to understand how their choices are made and how would they like it to be made. It is through creating safe spaces for such exposures we can facilitate the process of going beyond singular stories and developing a more informed worldview.
